BORDEAUX GISCOURS   v. EYMET, Sunday 2nd May

Eymet's flying start to the season came crashing down with a 5-wicket defeat to Bordeaux Giscours. To win games at this level you need three batsmen to get a semi-decent score and you must bat the full 40 overs. Eymet did neither.

A frisky spring day greeted us on our arrival. Extra sweaters were dug out as Sam Harrell won the toss and sent out Simon Palmer and Tom Hinds to do battle. The others took shelter in the President's marquee. An irregular bounce kept the boys quiet and Tom was unable to repeat last Sunday's heroics, falling to a good catch by Bordeaux legend Rupert Holderness in the gully. Nigel Jones followed him not long after. Mike Gear came in number 4 and steadied the ship. Simon began to mix his trademark lofted drives with aggressive pulling, clearing the ropes on a couple of occasions. With the help of Bordeaux's Mr.Wides, 80 was on the board at the halfway stage. Not bad considering the weather and the sponginess of the outfield .Then, unfortunately, one delivery stood up on Simon as he was driving off the back foot, and he was caught at mid-off for a fine 55. Mike was beginning to play some attractive strokes when he was given out LBW to a right-arm round the wicket bowler ! .....92 for 2 now read 100 for 4 off 24 overs. It was vital that Eymet used all the available overs but it was not to be. Bill Rhodes showed some aggression as did Vince Morgan. President Tim "Tiger" Smith was covering one end quite well before he didn’t get the benefit of the doubt in a run-out decision. Thus, the innings died out at 125 off only 33 overs.

Holderness and Hurst mostly played thin air in the first few overs of Bordeaux's reply. Rupert, as always, rode his luck, and today was his day as his shots started to connect. Only Simon managed to subdue him with a fine spell conceding only 13 runs off his 8 overs. Captain Harrell called on the "ultra-slows" as Bordeaux put on over 60 in the first 15 overs. Bill was tidy at one end but Martin "Warney" Smith continued his fine form. Rupert (43) was mesmerized by Warney's snakish deliveries and soon holed out to a fine, diving catch by Glyn Taylor, running forward from mid-off. Two more wickets followed for the bearded firefighter including a smart stumping by Sam. Bordeaux's run rate almost crawled to a stop. Eymet began to hope. Bordeaux had slowed from 80 off 21 overs to 113 off 35. Hurst had faced over 60 balls when he was caught and bowled by Nigel for 22. However, despite one more wicket falling, Bordeaux had held back the experienced Neil Vasey, who kept his head and steered the winning runs. Bordeaux achieved their target in 37.3 overs.

Disappointing . There were some good individual performances with the bat and ball. Bordeaux fielded well but Eymet didn't enjoy much luck in their innings. How they rued those missing 7 overs. Bordeaux took their time to overhaul the target – 4 more overs than Eymet. Keeping Bordeaux out in the cold for another half hour and squeezing an extra 20 runs might have led to a different result. Roll on St. Aulaye!
