A sun-kissed Stade Bretou greeted the Eymet players (as
it did those of Mold one hour later !). In perfect conditions
David Horlock lost the toss and the visitors chose to bat.
A combination of the wiles of Alan Combe and Nigel Jones
and the residual effects of alcohol kept them subdued. Nigel
and Alan bagged an opener each, both snaffled by our ever-reliable
keeper David 'Soft Hands' Horlock. When Paul Martin joined
in too, Mold were wobbling at 45 for 3 off 15. However their
number five was a man in a hurry and proceeded to hit the
poor ball very hard indeed. Not just the ball in fact. He
also managed to break a footballer's windscreen and damage
2 cars with another blow. Simon Colverson was sent to retrieve
the ball and did well to return unharmed. Hurried calls
were made to our resident diplomat, President Bond, who
was called in to pacify the irate football crowd. The guilty
batsman was bowled soon afterwards but not before he had
bludgeoned a fine 80. At the other end Paul was finding
some rhythm and consistently removed batsmen with good balls.
Consequently Mold were restricted to 154 all out off their
35 overs.
Eymet too had difficulty imposing themselves, perhaps scared
of provoking more footballers, now heavily tanked up after
their game. When we lost Harv (Benwell) after 7 overs only
17 runs were on the board. Mold had a young, athletic team
in the field and were spoilt for allrounders. David and
Nigel started to play their shots 'though, and while they
were there a win was very much on the cards. However David
was castled with the total on 54 as Mold tightened their
grip. Nigel struck a few blows before holing out also on
54 as the run chase intensified. Wickets followed and despite
some hits from Paul we were all out for 108.
RESULT : LOST MOLD 154 all out (P.Martin 5-30, N.Jones
2-14)
EYMET 108 all out (N.Jones 54)
