EYMET v. DAMAZAN, 10th June
Damazan won the toss and elected to bat in muggy conditions.
Perhaps mindful of the fact they'd been dismissed for 55
the week before, they began cautiously. They barely reached
40 off the first 15 overs. Then Minor Counties player Mike
Gear lost his cool to the cunning Kiwi, Palmer. Neil Vasey
held the rest of the innings together with a diligent 55.
However, until the last over no one was prepared to hit
in the air and runs were at a premium. Our bowlers all bowled
tightly. In particular, Harvey Benwell turned the screw and
returned to form with a miserly 3 for 14 off 8. As a result
Damazan were thirty or forty short of a good score when
they closed their innings on 134 for 5.
Eymet struggled too. After recent rains the lush grass turned
certain fours into singles. At 30-odd off 13 overs Simon
was out lbw. David and Nigel then took control and mixed
their shots well. Even the leg-spinner ,with his tempting
looping wares, was played sensibly. They took us to over
90 before David holed out going for his fifty with a big
one. With the hard work done, Harv then Martin kept Nigel
company 'til the target was reached with time to spare.
A good team performance all round. Perhaps the difference
between the two teams lay in Damazan's circumspection compared
to Eymet's willingness to adapt to the conditions and biff
the bad ball over the infield occasionally.
RESULT: WON DAMAZAN 134-5 off 40 overs (Vasey 55, Gear 36,
Benwell 3-14)
EYMET 135-3 off 34 overs (Jones 50*, Horlock 46)
